J&J Bar & Grill

1065 North Thomas Street
Memphis, TN 38107
(901) 864-8788

Run by nice people who claim to have live music, and definitely have a DJ, plenty cold beer, and some fine artwork. This place was dead last time we went in, but we've since seen a full parking lot when driving past on a recent Saturday night. Hopefully things start looking up. The operator is nobly trying to set musicians in Memphis up with some place to play off of Beale Street, and he's had some good players in the house when we've visited, they just don't feel like cranking it up for five people. In fact, we met the bass player for Shirley Brown's band one night. Surprised to see a pro hanging out with the paper bag drinkers, we asked if he plays juke joints. "I'm in this motherfucker here," he said. J&J is past Club Hughes and One Block North, on the way to CC Blues Club on Thomas Street, so do stop in, grab a beer, and support our fledgling juke joints.

As of late September 2007, they've recently hosted gigs for Bill Coday and the Don Valentine Band, and have something in the works for October 2007. Stay tuned for more details, and call the gig line (above) for updates.
